Many Ohio pastors and ministry workers have overpaid in income tax. Get your refund now!

The City of Columbus and all RITA municipalities are allowing pastors to claim a refund for any local taxes paid to those districts during 2013, 2014, and 2015. That includes any taxes withheld from your paycheck from clergy earnings or estimated payments made to the municipality to cover tax owed for clergy earnings.

Here's the scoop:

  • This sounds too good to be true, but it's not!

  • A recent tax law changes in the Ohio Revised Code changed the definition of wages subject to local (city) income tax.

  • The bottom line is that clergy/pastoral wages were not subject to local income tax through the end of 2015, but few noticed this very nuanced language in the Ohio law until Ohio changed the law effective January 1, 2016.

We’ve filed successful returns for several pastors of various denominations and also ministry workers with organizations such as Cru, Young Life, CCO and similar organizations. This law applies to everyone who earns “clergy” income. These individuals have received sizable refunds, sometimes in the thousands, that they can use to support their families, or pour back into their ministries.
